Newlyn has the largest fishing fleet in the south of the country with its medieval quay dating back to 1437. The front part of the Smugglers dates back to the early 1700s when it was a number of small dwellings. Over the years the Smugglers has had a variety of uses; it was once a sweet shop and a dressmakers. It has been run as a hotel and restaurant since the early 1950s. Newlyn has attracted artists over the years T C Gotch first came to the area in 1880. The first artist to settle here was Walter Langley he made Newlyn his home in 1882.
