Bacolet Beach Club is an exclusive boutique hotel, whose owner has strived to create a stylist retreat. Developed by former European fashion model Gloria Jones-Knapp, the hotel is a deliberately restful and luxurious property nestled in an idyllic crescent-bay on the island of Tobago.
This delightful space shares a commitment to luxury and personal service, where its intimate size encourages a particularly warm and friendly atmosphere.
The 40-bedroomed property has been styled to reflect a cross-cultural aesthetic; Asian-inspired silk elements play nicely with curlicued pieces and modernist fixtures in an offhanded, yet chic manner.
According to the owner, "the idea was to take a raw space that sloped downwards to the sea and make a luxury boutique hotel that worked with the surrounding nature and the land itself - it had to look a certain way and all the details were very carefully selected for each area across the Beach Club." Indeed, the smallish, very private hotel offers a rare, heady mix of the sleek luxury complemented by surrounding natural beauty.
With the Superior Penthouse, this balance is particularly evident; the spacious balconies directly overlooks the ocean. Letting in everything but the actual sea spray, the airy interiors are filled with luxury details like the delicately beaded lamps and grand, silk covered chaise lounges. This boon decor, is also extended to the bathrooms. Marbled in its entirety from floor to ceiling, the spacious en-suite allows for the breadth required when preening excessively for dinner, which is never a bad thing.
A romantic, charming little bridge leads to the hotel’s free-standing restaurant - Cafe Havana. Café Havana is one of Tobago's chicest restaurant and cocktail bar, featuring an eclectic mix of modern interior design with a hint of the Caribbean flair. Creating a comfortable and tranquil surrounding ideal for relaxing in the sultry tropical nights, open verandas are enhanced by green heart wood floors and high ceilings extending over three levels proving cool breezes and panoramic views over lush gardens and the hotel’s secluded sandy bay.
"Bacolet Beach Club and a laid-back-chic lifestyle come easily to me" shares Jones-Knapp. "I grew up humbly, but travelled a lot as I got older. I only worked in banking prior to being a model, but long before that, I was really influenced by my mother, who was a mainstay in this area. My mother, Olive Grant Jones, was a student of French cuisine and a good seamstress. She was appointed to the post of Chief Housekeeper for our first Prime Minister Dr Eric Williams. We always had some kind of restaurant and catering-bit happening in Bacolet and I was always there, serving guests and helping out. Over time I became more involved and decided to acquire a property the Old Donkey Cart House, to turn it into Tobago’s first wine bistro. Years later I obtained a few more acres across the Donkey Cart, where today stands the Half Moon Blue hotel, with direct access to its own Sandy Bay. I saw the potential for something unique - a little bit influenced by that heady, European way of entertaining that I experienced as a model, but with a Tobagonian influence.”
Indeed, Bacolet Beach Club offers the right melange for the discerning holiday maker.
